Document Summary

Roots grow in three steps: cell division, elongation, and differentiation at the tip (a pical meristem). Root hairs: increase root surface area; enhance water absorption. Buttress roots: aerial roots that gives support to tree trunks. In both, ground tissue is near the center of root cells so it can transport salt and water. In eudicots, the stele (vascular cylinder) appears as a core of xylem with phloem in between. In monocots, the stele is a large central area of tissue with a ring of xylem and phloem. Difference between woody and herbaceous eudicots: woody stems have the vascular tissue in the inner core, whereas in the herbaceous eudicots, the tissues surround the outside, wood tissue is secondary xylem. Fruits are the mature ovary of the flower. Simple fruits (pea): single carpel of one flower, or several fused carpels. Aggregate fruits (strawberry, blueberry): develop frm many separate carpels of one flower.
