Document Summary

Practice of genetics started with gregor mendel in the 1860"s - different traits associated with peas. Did this all without knowing about genes/chromosomes (dna) he did this purely of inference and no physical evidence. Science community didn"t accept mendel"s ndings because of the traits that came out in the peas (color, height, etc. ) And people thought we accepted traits from the environment around us. The association of paternal and maternal chromosomes in pairs and their subsequent separation during the reducing division may constitute the physical basis of the mendeleian law of hereditary - sutton -> chromosome theory of inheritance. Independent assortment of chromosomes during meiosis is the physical cause for independent assortment of genes. Alternative forms of the same gene are called alleles (variants) Histones important in the wrapping and tightening of chromosomes. This allows them to regulate gene expression depending on if they are tightly packed or loosely packed. Dna -> rna -> protein (central dogma of genetics)
