Creating democracies exam 1 study guide: come up with a sophisticated definition of democracy. Democracy is structured (structured conflict), not random , you know how it will work. For political to succeed , if other aspects of life are also democratic than this is the most reliable indicator that democracy will succeed. You can"t have it if you have an election and no one shows up, for example. In many new democracies in their constitution it is written, an election is not valid unless 50% or more of the population comes out to vote. Contestation , politics is about competing for something, a struggle. Something is in demand and there isn"t enough to go around so there has to be some way to sort out who gets it (allocation mechanism) Representation , democracy is representational government whether direct or otherwise. Gov is too complex i have to find someone to represent me.
