Document Summary

We will review the first three classes in general and discuss several specific disorders in each class: while discussing symptoms, everyone will recognize aspects of themselves reflected in these disorders. This is a normal reaction to this material. Keep in mind that to qualify for a disorder, your symptoms must be severe enough to significantly affect your daily activities and the quality of your life. You may or may not have a mental disorder- only a doctor or a licensed therapist can diagnose this. The good news is that if you do, you are certainly not alone. Mental illness is much more common than most think: this chapter will incorporate a significant amount of material not found in the text. As a reminder, if the major concepts sheets refers to topics (cid:498)as discussed in lecture(cid:499), then look to your lecture notes: there are several handouts that will be posted on blackboard for this and the next chapter.
