Document Summary

Plant foraging is when plant roots seek and proliferate into resource pockets of water and nutrients in the soil. Optimal foraging: foraging that maximizes rate of integrity intake (such as prey size). Trade-offs: when predation risk is high, adults decrease in feeding activity. Another example: as nesting birds increase foraging activity to feed young, nestling morality from predation increases. Elk and diehl experiment: factors that play into predation include active pursuit vs. sit- and-wait, prey density, prey escape tactics, etc. , and prey can be affected by escape speed, schooling, body size, refugees, etc. Example includes the pike predator and perch prey. An experiment allowed the prey to forage in pond or seek refuge in aquatic vegetation behind mesh that excludes pike predators. This resulted in the pike using a stationary ambush strategy and the prey sh increasing their refuge use in the presence of predators. Perch prey mortality declined by more than 50% in prey refuge treatment.
