Aspects of the environment influence our behavior only when it enters our subjective reality. All behavior is telic = it has an aim/ purpose = all behaviors aim towards satisfaction of current need. We move toward full functioning and wholeness. Maintenance and enhancement = we satisfy specific needs of the organism. Organismic valuing process= we set values on behaviors that move us towards maintenance and enhancement. 1. valence = positive vs negative quality of an emotion. 2. intensity = strength of the emotion. Central question = how do adults get uniquely messed up in their organismic valuing process. Being out of touch with emotions is the basis of all neurosis/ psychosis. Roger and the self the self is unique to humans = the self is separate from the organism itself.
