Document Summary

Herbert blumer (1900-1987)- student of mead; named the perspective symbolic interactionism; argued three basic assumptions: We act towards things, objects, events, situations on the basis of their meaning. Meanings are no inherent, but are negotiated with and through interaction with others. Meanings can change or be modified through interaction. Charles horton cooley (1864-1929)- explored the way social responses influence the development of the self and social interaction; famous for his idea: the looking glass self ; our selves are reflected back to us which shapes our self esteem. We imagine who we look to others. We imagine other people"s judgment of us. We develop a feeling or sentiment about ourselves based on our perceptions of others" judgments. Erving goffman (1922-1982)- extended si concepts with a focus on the self as a social construction that is transient and temporary; explored how we define situations and how those definitions influence and shape the way we act toward others.
