Document Summary

Deudney visits the security-centered revisionist argument (92) in chapter three of bounding. The two iron laws are clear from the start. Law is that republics were small and because of their size, very vulnerable, so they militarized. The second iron law is that when these small republics expanded, they became despotic monarchies (93). A strong aspect of deudney"s work is that he builds from the bottom up and has a very coherent structure. Chapter by chapter, he introduces the subject matter, then first talks about historical and classical ideas pertaining to the topic; in this case, arguments on polis republicanism and limitations of the ancient republics. In this chapter, background regarding important historical figures, such as thucydides (103-104), helps point out flaws in previously accepted republican security theory. Perhaps the most useful is deudney"s flow charts on the iron laws, though they all somehow end with fear or rioting.
