Document Summary

The adaptive immune response improves as a result of exposure to microbial invaders or other foreign material. When such material is first encountered, specific lymphocytes the main participants in adaptive immunity recognize the material and then proliferate (multiply) in response. This allows the most effective lymphocytes to eliminate a specific invader when it is encountered. The protection provided by this response is called adaptive immunity. After exposure to microbe or antigen immunity takes a week or more to build adaptive immunity. During this time the host depends on innate immunity for protection. The adaptive immune system has molecular specificity, meaning that the recognition of the antigen is precise. Immunological memory produces a stronger response to re-exposure. Tolerance, the ability to ignore any given molecule. The immune system can distinguish normal host cells from invading microbes, an ability referred to as self versus non-self recognition. The first adaptive response to a particular antigen is called the primary response.
