Telling Time
- C.E. = Common Era (from 1-2017)
- Dates after the birth of Jesus
- Put AFTER dates (ex: 140 C.E.)
- A.D. = Anno Domini
- Latin, means in the year of our Lord
- Put BEFORE dates (ex: A.D. 140)
- Not used anymore
- It is 2017 C.E. or A.D. 2017
- B.C.E. = Before the Common Era
- Dates before the birth of Jesus
- Some use B.C. (Before Christ)
- Put AFTER dates (ex: 250 B.C.E.)
Greeks and Romans
- Greeks = people who speak Greek
- Modern times: Greeks live in Europe in Greece, formed in 1800s
- Ancient tImes: People who spoke Greek lived in area of Aegean Sea
- Middle of 2nd millennium B.C.E. (1500 B.C.E.)
- We know because they left writing form (Linear B) proved to be Greek
- Spread (incl. culture) to Mediterranean Sea over next 1,000 years
- S. France, Black Sea, S. Italy, Sicily, N. Africa
- Alexander the Great (356-23 B.C.E.) conquered chunk of Afroeurasia, brought

Mediterranean
- Romans admired Greek culture -> Latin borrowed Greek vocab
- Roman Empire lasted 2,000 yrs but Western empire fell apart
- Middle of 1st millennium C.E., Western, Latin-speaking part divided into
many independent states
- Latin remained language of education
- Latin changed to become modern Romance languages (Spanish, French,
Italian)
- Spanish evolved from Latin as spoken in area of Spain & Romania,
etc.
- Eastern, Greek-speaking part lived on until 1453 C.E.
- English is NOT romance language, does not descend directly from Latin
