Document Summary

Ath 2a: things to think about for the final: discuss two different ways used by colonial powers to direct and control the labor of colonized peoples other than direct coercive methods such as slavery. People don"t want to do this so they tax them, with the tax being paid in only in the currency of the colonial power. This forces people to grow/sell what the government wanted them to: taking away people"s land (disposition of land). People who are forced to live on small partitions of land so they can"t make ends meet and then are forced to work for the government anyways. Example: british colony took over 70% of kenya"s land and did nothing to it. They took it over to deny access to the locals, making them work for the government even though they didn"t want to. They advocated for the people for the most part.
