Art history 40a checklist 9: late classical and hellenistic art and architecture. The athenian agora: civic center of athens, from 7th c. bc onward. Buildings around the open area included the bouleuterion (senate house), royal stoa (legal office of archon basileus), painted stoa, temples to apollo, hephaistos, mother of the gods; altar of 12 gods, racetrack, courtrooms, tholos, fountain house, mint, and more. Also served as the marketplace for food and manufactured items. Houses were built all around and right next to the agora, but they had to respect its boundary markers. The house of simon, a cobbler, is mentioned by ancient authors as a place next to the agora frequented by socrates, and has been excavated and identified by iron hobnails, bone eyelets for laces, and an inscribed cup. The prison where socrates was held and executed has also been tentatively identified, but is still open to interpretation.
