Document Summary

Romans are known for their amazing sculptures and art. Many important authoritative figures would have a bust or sculpture made of themselves to portray a strong, heroic and powerful image to the public. An amazing marble freestanding statue of a roman patron would be the sculpture of augustus of primaporta made in approximately 20 bce. His statue is posing as a military victor and a powerful general. Augustus is taking a step forward with his finger raised, which symbolizes his leadership. His pose is similar to polykleitos"s doryphoros, showing chiastic movement. The sculptor is also sending a message to the viewers that augustus has the god on his sides. On his breastplates the sculptor has portrayed scenes that depict the victories of augustus on the battlefield. There are even personifications of the countries that he has conquered. To further confirm augustus"s authoritative position, the sculptor also sculpted eros sitting on a dolphin near the legs of augustus.
