Fear of things that are dangerous is important for our survival. Kluver - bucy 1939 studies - lesions of temporal lobes. Took chunks out of temperal lobes on monkeys. Will respond to research scientists in fearful way initially. Over time, when presented with stimulus/food, and when they feel it is safe, they will go for it. Made a specific lesion in brain, they found that they wouldn"t treat the snake like danger. Amygdala will fire and direct our attention towards danger. Sm had urbach-wiethe and lost ability to perceive fear. When evaluating facial expressions, she focused on the nose but when told to look at the other areas of face, she was able to perceive emotion better. Patient sm has no amygdala and thus no fear. When her amygdala was taken out she couldn"t tell what peoples facial expressions meant. Measured her ability to tel facial expression by her eye tracking of the face.
