CRM/LAW C167 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Uniform Crime Reports
Document Summary
Reliability is when you gather the same data and it produces the same result every time. Produces the same result does not mean the data is correct, it is just reliable and leads to the same conclusion every time. Example: fruit and vegetable scale at the supermarket, every time you weigh your product it will always show the same weight on the scale. Validity is being factually sound; information has to be correct rather than consistent like reliability. Example: the supermarket scale is adjusted to have an extra 2 pounds of pressure. The weight of your product will always be reliable but the weight of the product is off by two pounds making it invalid. Bias is anything that can interfere with data making the end result less valid. Example: the additional 2 pounds of pressure in the previous example means any measurements with that scale will be consistently biased to be. 2 pounds heavier than the product really is.
