Science that studies the whole earth as a system of many interacting parts and focuses on the changes within and between those parts. Biosphere (earth"s organisms, organic matter that has not decomposed) Components that make up the cryosphere & where they are found on earth. Sea ice, snow, lake and river ice, glaciers, ice shelves, icebergs. How parts of the cryosphere have been changing & how this affects earth. Snow, river and lake ice (day to month) Feedbacks on climate system (albedo, changes in ecosystems that depend on snow and ice, changes in ocean and atmospheric circulation) Affects water supplies, sea level, natural hazards like oods and avalanches. Open systems exchange energy and mass with surroundings. Reservoir = amount of material of interest in a given form. Ux = amount of material added or removed. Positive = increase to increase, decrease to decrease (arrow) Lecture 3 - what controls a planet"s temperature. How much energy is emitted (area under curve)
