Spirit are petitioned through specific drum rhythms and songs to induce a trance like state in the petitioner. The orishas need to receive offerings to come down. People need them as guardians to help solve their problems (love, money, health) and in turn the orishas need them. Allowed slaves to keep practicing and preserve their african faith, thus surviving in a catholic society. Slaves come to cuba, the slave owners prohibited them from practicing santeria. So they hid their orishas behind catholic saints, thus the slave owners believed the slaves were worshipping the saints, but they were worshipping the orishas instead. When slaves worshipped babalu aye they seemed like they were worshipping st. lazarus (st. for illness) Fusion religion that emerges out brazil in the 1920s. Combined afro-brazilian beliefs, french spiritism, and catholicism.
