In what setting were data gathered: 3rd factors (alternative attributes of groups studied) A third factor explains both the claimed cause and the claimed effect: effect size. 1st thing to ask about a statistical study is: who is paying for the study, and what is their vested interest in the results. Last thing to ask: are the estimates statistically significant: you are asked to ascertain how variable z has been trending. (a) identify a measure of z that is reliable but not necessarily valid.
