Document Summary
Heterotrophs degrade and oxidize organic molecules (nutrients) via catabolic pathways to generate three important biological molecules: atp, nadph, and biosynthetic precursors. _catabolism uses the energy released by oxidation reactions (mostly from cleavage of high energy bonds) to generate atp. Enzymes that catalyze such reactions are usually called dehydrogenases (name) and involve the transfer of electrons to an electron acceptor, usually nad+ (function) _a primary goal of catabolic (degradative) metabolism is the production of atp (for glycolysis, tca cycle) Examples: phosphoglycerate kinase or pyruvate kinase (b) electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation the formation of atp from. Adp and pi by an f0f1-atpase using the electrochemical gradient produced by electron transport as the source of energy. Substrate level phosphorylation (primarily glycolysis) is used during anaerobic conditions by skeletal muscle in which the need for atp exceeds the ability of the cells to obtain o2 for oxidative phosphorylation.
