Document Summary

Anesthetic maintenance phase & machine basics: maintenance phase begins after induction phase and intubation, the anesthetic machine. Tank of medical-grade oxygen is the oxygen source. Full tank oxygen pressure above or at 2000psi. Empty tank oxygen pressure below 400-500psi. Oxygen flow controlled by oxygen flow meter in liters/minute. Some machines use nitrous oxide as added analgesic (pain relief) and carrier gas for inhaled anesthetics. + when nitrous oxide is used, it should not be more than 70% of the total gas flow. + patient must receive at least 30% oxygen. Gas combo then delivered to breathing circuit and animal. Most animals require a higher level of anesthetic at first, but the dial can be turned down once the patient is securely anesthetized. Circle rebreathing system most common but other breathing circuits exist and are used as well. Co2-absorbing granules start white and turn blue when they need to be replaced. Rebreathing bag inflates and deflates with each breath.
