Theatre is the french spelling, theater is german, both are common. Theatre will use conventions (asides, change of location through dialogue, etc,) to permit. Theatre & ritual comparisons performance & sports (similarities/differences) There are multiple definitions to theater; an occupation (acting, stage managing, design, etc. Performance studies is an interdisciplinary field that studies performance and uses performance as a lens to study the world. Draws from performing arts, anthropology, sociology, literary theory, and legal studies. All follow same plot, may change along way, but have commonality. Sports are variable and unpredictable, theatre is scripted and orchestrated preordained. Play genres/form: i. e. comedy, tragedy, melodrama, farce, history play, problem play, satire. Death of one or more main characters. Universal theme of human life & society. Filled w/ bold, aggressive, and heroic actions against big odds. A protagonist of high rank & stature who undergoes decline of fortune along way. Protagonist comes to a self-realization of hamartia (fundamental flaw, tragic mistake)
