Humans have white scleara- this gives us the ability to communicate through our eyes a lot more. Is it because of language-- no the whole brain is larger, not just broca"s area; is it because humans have complex societies- no animals like bees and sheep have complex societies too. Dunbar hypothesis; ecology; size of home range; size of social groups; internal navigation; manage relationships. Deerlike whale ancestor- a lot of the hypotheses above have contrainsts; in a world were a deerlike whale ancestor may have existed, contraints are not absolutes. Large body size = larger brain size, this is a trend phylogeny is a factor. Dunbar said that large brains are adaptive. For a charater to be adaptive, the benefits must outweigh the costs. Osteichtyes- boney fish like damselfish the clown fish lay their eggs inside sea anemones and can are not affected by stings. Sarcopterygii- known as the african coelacanth- boney fins that articualate to the skeleton.
