Be able to describe the three purposes of social research and pick out an example of each: explanatory (explain why something is happening without explaining why), descriptive, exploratory (ask why its happening) Know the difference between basic and applied science: engage in research that helps. What are some of the errors we make in human inquiry: inaccurate observations, illogical reasoning, and overgeneralizing. Understand the different views of reality (i. e. , premodern, modern and postmodern: premodern- based on info that we received from authoritative figures, modern- based on empiricism/observation/research, postmodern- based on what you see (the eye of the beholder) What are the two pillars of social science: logic and observation. Be able to distinguish between methodology and epistemology: methodolgy - science of find out, epistemology- science of knowledge. Know the different components of a research article: abstract, intro, methods, results, discussion and references.
