Useful because you can use it as a reference since all songs were learned by rote memorization. Words only -- no musical notation or indications. Antiphoner: a liturgical book containing a collection chants. Monophonic: single musical line without an accompaniment. Musical pitches are relative, no exact pitch. By the 10th century, neumes were added to show the general contour of the melody.
