Western classical music has roots stretching back over 5000 years. Music in medieval europe was nearly inseparable from the christian church. Ancient (1200 bc - 500 ad) > medieval (500 - 1400) > renaissance (1400 - 1600) > Baroque (1600 - 1750) > classical (1750-1820) > romantic(1820-1900) > modern(1850- present) Music notation is the result of nearly a 1000 years of small adjustments and developments. Useful because you can use it as a reference since all songs were learned by rote memorization. Words only -- no musical notation or indications. Antiphoner: a liturgical book containing a collection chants. Monophonic: single musical line without an accompaniment. Musical pitches are relative, no exact pitch. By the 10th century, neumes were added to show the general contour of the melody. A virga raises the pitch (looks like a slash /) A punctum lowers the pitch (looks like a period . ) Theorist, teacher and inventor of the 4-line musical staff!
