An earthquake is basically vibrations of the ground (violent shaking motions) created by the sudden release of energy accumulating in deformed rocks. Basically, they are nothing more but the energy released due to the stress in faults and stuff. How are they different? where rocks begin to rupture or move in an earthquake. Focus is the point of the origin of an earthquake. Epicenter is the point on the earth"s surface directly above the focus. It is above: longer the distance and the faster the slip is, the bigger it is. What is the order they arrive at? ground. Order of seismic waves: p-waves, s-waves, surface waves! Body waves: p- waves (primary), s-waves (secondary), surface waves. Temporarily changes the volume of a material. Think of a slinky going back and forth! Waves that shake particles at right angles (perpendicular) to their direction of travel. Temporariraly changes the shape of a material.
