A 1966 demonstration organized by james meredith in which african americans marched from memphis, tennessee to jackson, mississippi to protest against racism. On the second day of this march, meredith was shot so other key activists of this era like martin luther king jr. , stokeley carmichael, and floyd mckissick took over as leaders of this march. The significance of that was that since meredith was no longer there, these other activists were able to slightly alter the theme of the protest. Which is why in greensboro, ms, where racial tensions were already high, This was also significant because meredith"s lawsuit alleging discrimination as he was trying to attend the university of. Mississippi engaged him in the civil rights movement, which turned him into a veteran of the movement, which encouraged others to want to join in.
