More communication will usually help fix problems with others. In relationships, conflict is dangerous and destructive. The meaning of a message is in the words used to convey it. We construct meaning with others through communication. The only goal of communications is to get your ideas across clearly (ie. , information transfer is the only goal) Ex: lecture: wants us to be interested, only goal should not be just info transfer. What are the goals of interpersonal communication beyond information transfer . In our communication with others, we must simultaneously manage each of these goals. We hide things we may not like about ourselves. Ex: instagram; shows all good no bad. Figuring people out (knowing what to expect) People are simultaneously hiding things from us. Controlling my own emotions and also others. Ex: changing the way i communicate when someone is crying. This is different than impression management because i am controlling other people"s emotions as well.
