Democratic origin: oligarchy/ aristocracy, monarchy, was ruled by the people. Athenian ideal kept democracy alive: city-state 5th century b. c. e. Direct democracy: all citizens must decide and meet, unworkable in large areas. Representative democracy: select representatives to act on behalf of citizens. Rule by the few: its small groups that are effective, religious, rich and educated, able to lead and agree very easily. Rule by the many: hard to get and agree on certain decisions. Benchmarks of representative democracy: popular sovereignty. Government leaders are selected in competitive election. Government policies reflect the wishes of the people. Political equality: equal protection, civil rights, linked to economic equality. The people put the people in place, because as people we cannot control certain things: objections to liberal democracy. Incompetent- we do not have complete info, easily swayed. It passes on from one person to the next. There is no order, no one has order than another person, all people are equal.
