The story resonates to current events such as racist language influencing prejudices, the targeting of immigrants and minorities, and the police brutality on the african american community. The underground railroad helps teach lessons of a generational yearning for true freedom and gives insight to institutionalized and influenced racism, which help those in today"s society better understand perspective on the african american community. The 13th amendment official abolished slavery and freed the african americans in torturous servitude. However, while laws can legally change society, culture still exists and may limit any legitimate change. Through generations both cora"s grandmother and her mother struggle with slavery the same as cora does.
