Crime : actions that violate laws defining which socially harmful behaviors will be subject to the government"s power to impose punishments. Statutes: outlaws certain kinds of behaviors and often sets the penalty if it is violated; can be state of federal. Crimes : considered wrong in themselves (examples: sexual violence, armed crimes prohibited by the government (examples: gambling, prostitution, drug offenders accountable for actions, protects rights of those in the system: doing justice: catch and punish offenders, controlling crime. Deterrence: preventing crime: like offenses will be treated alike. Federal vs state cj system: most federal crimes are for drug offenses or immigration issues.
