Categories of self-descriptions: physical, social, psychological and holistic. Big in early psychology but we don"t introspect often, and much happens outside of awareness: a lot of thought is outside of awareness but we are all amateur psychologists searching for causal theories for our behaviors and thoughts. Our theories are not always correct because we make incorrect judgments about causes of our actions: reason-generated attitude change: attitude change as a result of thinking about reasons for your attitude. ex: pro/con list. The problem with this is that it is temporary, does not predict future attitudes or happiness. Inaccurate causal theories are hard to accurately weigh what matters and we generate reasons that don"t matter, but cause momentary change. We bring up reasons that are simply easy to verbalize.
