Adaptive strategy- a society"s main system of economic production. Similarities between unrelated societies is their possession of a similar adaptive strategy: foraging; relies on natural resources for subsistence (not plant/animal reproduction). Simple tools to grow crops, shifting cultivation b/c relationship between people and their plots is not permanent: agriculture; intensive, continuous use of land. Labor intensive/property based: pastoralism; activities focus on domesticated animals. Nomadism- entire group moves with animals throughout the year. Transhumance- part of the group moves with the herds, but most people stay in the home village. Correlate- associations or covariations between 2 or more variables. Correlates of foraging: band societies, nuclear family, egalitarian relations. Principles of distribution and exchange: market; organizational process of purchase and sale at money price (value set by supply and demand). Profit-oriented: redistribution; operates when goods, services, or their equivalent, move from local level to a center, reciprocity continuum: Generalized; giving with no specific expectation of exchange (closest relationship)
