Document Summary

Compare and contrast directional selection, stabilizing selection, and disruptive selection. In directional selection, one trait is favored over another resulting in a higher fitness and survival on one side. For example, the drought in 1977 on daphne island resulted in a decline of vegetation. The smaller and softer seeds slowly reduced and all that were left was hard and large seeds. The wide beaked finches were able to eat the larger seeds and so they were able to pass on their traits to the next generation, while the smaller beaked finches slowly declined. Over a couple of years, the beak sizes on the island increased and showed directional selection. Stabilizing selection is selection that favors the average trait, or whatever is between the two extremes. Usually, the fitness and survival are low on either extreme and highest in the middle. We can see an example of this in robins and the way they lay their nest.
