Document Summary

List some traditional named taxa that are actually unnatural (paraphyletic) groups. A monophyletic group, or clade, are all of the taxa species that are descendants to a single common ancestor. Clades can nest within other clades, an important feature. A paraphyletic group include some, but not all, of the descendants of a common ancestor. A classic example of paraphyletic groups includes the relationship of birds to other reptiles. Based on the knowledge of what we know today, birds are sister groups with crocodiles. However, crocodiles, lizards, turtles, and snakes are well known reptiles and they form a paraphyletic group. However, we can"t classify them with a name (a characteristic of monophyletic groups) reptilian unless we include birds into the picture. Fish is also a paraphyletic group because if you look at all the descendants of the fish"s common ancestor, it includes all tetrapods, such as mammals and reptiles.
