Document Summary

Purpose: the purpose of this lab is to determine whether three unknown compounds are made up of ionic or covalent bonds. If the compound maintains qualities from both bonds, the compound is polar covalent. Ionic bonds, for one, are usually formed from a metal and a nonmetal. They are composed of a crystal lattice, which characterizes many of its properties as to that of salts; ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points to the extreme strength and rigidity of the crystal lattice. The compounds are also very brittle due to the fact that the ions are locked in place, and the force of the ions on one another causes them to touch and repel from one another. They are also soluble in water, because both are polar substances. Once dissolved in water, ionic compounds (or salts) conduct electricity, meaning that they are electrolytes.
