MICROBIO 310 Study Guide - Quiz Guide: Corticosterone, Gut Flora, Analysis Of Variance
Document Summary
Microbiota and host determinants of behavioural phenotype in maternally separated mice. News: recently, a research study from mcmaster university discovers a link between intestinal bacteria and depression. The interaction between the gut microbiota and the host environment is complex yet hypersensitive, with data suggesting that even minor stress-induced changes in the microbiota metabolic activity could cause profound effects on the brain and behavior of the host. The mice were subjected to early life stress under the form of maternal separation (ms). From day 3 to day 21, they were separated for three hours each day from the mothers and then put back with them. Anova analysis, two conditions were used: presence/absence of gut microbiota and treatment/no treatment of ms (stress/no stress). The level of different hormones were measured in each sample group. With the presence of microbiota, stressed mice show anxiety and depression, proved by high level of stress hormone corticosterone and gut dysfunction neurotransmitter ach.
