What is culture? a way of life, a design for living a toolkit of practices, knowledge, and symbols people learn typically easier to notice/observe when it is not your culture. Components of culture: values and moral beliefs. 1. ideas held by individual or groups about what is desirable, proper, good and bad: what individual value is strongly influenced by the specific culture in which they live. 1. 1. example: competition is healthy: norms: actions to enforce values rules of conduct that specify appropriate behavior. 1: can prescribe a behavior or forbid it, backed by sanctions. 4. reflect values, shape how members of a culture behave: material culture: what you can touch; food, clothes, etc. 1: physical objects that individuals in society create which influence the way in which people live example: wheel = technology, symbolic culture: communication, signs, gestures. 1. 3: symbols helps construct our reality socially constructed constantly changes.
