Aristotle: mental capacities are rooted in the heart. Egyptians discarded the brain, but kept other organs of people who were mummified- didn"t care about brain. Hippocrates thought the brain was involved with thought, emotion, and perception. Descartes viewed the body as a physical machine and soul of non physical. One of the first theories to assign separate functions to specific cortical areas. The thought was that you could tell a lot about a person based on the bumps on their head. At the peak in 1820s-1840s, employers would ask phrenologists to feel and see if an employee would be hard working and honest. Wondered what area of the brain is responsible for language. Found that they had a similar area damaged. A certain region on left side of brain- now called broca"s area. Neuroplasticity: the ability of the brain to change during the entire lifespan through interaction with the environment.
