The complete health assessment: putting it all together. At the completion of this chapter the student will: Use recommended techniques to perform a complete history and physical examination. The examiner needs to develop a sequence that is comfortable for both patient and practitioner. Depth of history and extent of physical examination will be dictated by the history provided by the patient and/or significant other, the circumstances surrounding the need for health care, and the clinical judgment of the practitioner. Please refer to chapter 2 for developmental considerations. Use the problems presented throughout this text or develop others that reflect the patient population seen by students, and sched ule a time for students to perform a complete examination of a partner under faculty supervision. Observe students while they are performing the examination. The examination of various body systems should be integrated; for example, while the chest is exposed, the breast can be examined, heart sounds evaluated and lungs sounds auscultated.
