Its options are constrained by territorial behavior of others: the quality of resources controlled by an animal depends on its competitive ability. Territory- any defended area: best way to determine is animals are territorial- watch them. This is known as mapping space use. Home range- where an animal spends its time, every animal has one. But not every animal has a territory. If two home ranges are overlapping, the animals are not territorial and vice versa. Just for feeding, very temporary, just looking for food, nothing else. Humming birds are an example: they feed on flowers while migrating: mating. Territory that does not have food resources in it. Leks are a group of territories that are protected by male manakins, females come there solely for mating.
