Document Summary

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Atoms, molecules, and subatomic particles (neutrons, protons, and electrons) Atoms are basic particles that compose ordinary matter. Atoms bind together in specific shapes to form molecules. Ex. water oxygen + 2 hydrogen. Not linear (that would change boiling/freezing point) Chemistry seeks to understand the properties of matter by studying the structure of the particles. Solid particles pack close to each other in fixed locations giving a fixed volume and rigid shape. Liquid particles pack about as closely as they do in solid but are free to move giving a fixed volume but not a fixed shape. Gas particles have a lot of space between them and are free to move which gives neither a fixed volume nor a fixed shape. Pure substance composed of only one type of particle and its properties and composition do not vary from one sample to another. Element composed of only one kind of atom.
