Document Summary

Psychodynamic theory explains generalized anxiety as persistent difficulty in repressing primitive impulses. In dissociative amnesia the person is suddenly unable to recall important personal information. In dissociative fugue, the person abruptly leaves his or her home or place of work and travels to another place, losing memory of the past. Men are less likely than women to admit depression. He taught dogs that they wre helpless to escape an electric shock. They were prevented from leaving a cage in which they received repeated shocks. Neuroticism, which is heritable, is a personality trait characterized by persistent anxiety. Anxiety is connected with neuroticism, and mood and anxiety disorders are found in the same person. Psychodynamic perspective says that it occurs because the ego is overwhelmed by sexual or aggressive impulses from the id. Learning theorists say people engage in schizophrenic behavior b/c when it is more likely to be reinforced as normal behavior.
