Reagan sent troops to grenada and to lebanon. Bush 41 sent troops to panama and to the persian gulf. Clinton sent troops to haiti and to bosnia. Clinton closed off areas of arizona and utah to development. President is much more powerful when it comes to foreign affairs, much easier to blow up world than it is to increase taxes by one penny. President is weaker when it comes to domestic affairs/powers. These are the same questions that were asked over 200 years ago when the office of the president was being framed. Not a strong enough executive position, but the founding fathers were wary of governmental power and feared an executive office that was too strong. Discussed examples of a powerful and a pitiful president. Reviewed constitutional debate over role and power of president. Reviewed formal powers as laid out in constitution- not very impressive and vaguely defined. To understand modern presidential power, we must understand role in system.
