Social psychology = the study of how people"s thoughts, feelings and behaviour influence and are influenced by other people"s behaviour. Social cognition = mental processes associated with how we perceive and react to other people. Self-concept = the thoughts, feelings and beliefs we have about who we are and the characteristics we have. Self-esteem = evaluations about how worthy you are as a human being. People usually look to people who are similar to themselves when comparing. Reference groups = the categories of people to which you see yourself belonging to (and therefore usually compare yourself to) When comparing yourself to someone better than you, your self-esteem can increase through having the attitude, if they can do it, so can i. If someone is better than you, you can view them as too dissimilar to be in your reference group.
