Document Summary

Lesson 5: language: describe semantic rules people rely on to understand one another"s oral or written language, along with common mistakes that occur. Semantic rules govern the meaning that is assigned to words. You could think of it as the dictionary meaning. Without semantic rules, communication would be impossible because everyone would use symbols in unique ways and there would be no shared meaning. Equivocal language- consists of words that have more than one commonly accepted de nition. For example, a tube could refer to a test tube, a tube of toothpaste, a tv, and so forth. Some relative terms are so common that we mistakenly assume they have a clear meaning. Ex. fast, slow, smart, stupid, short, or long. Static evaluation - the tendency to view people or relationships as unchanging. Instead of labelling matt as permanently nervous, it"s more accurate to indicate the situations in which he behaves nervously.
