Unquenchable thirst to position himself as the center of the universe. 1352 bc amenhotep iii died, so the 4th comes into power- akhetaten. Priests controlled 1/3 of wealth and called the shots so akhenaten wanted that to stop so he can control everything. Aten got bumbped up as leading god. Amenhotep 5th year of his reign found a land and said the aten spoke to him and he knew this was the place to build his new city. Changed his name to akhenaten the servant of the aten. Abandoned thebes and chose a new site 130 miles away. He wanted the city to be built immedieately. They built it with small limestone blocks that could be carried from person to person carrying 1 plock and using them like bricks. The royal tomb was at the top and the city would be surrounded like sun rays emanating from the soul of the phaorah aten.
