Alcohol has been more popular than any other psychoactive drug in the western world. When used in moderation alcohol can enhance social occasions by creating a feeling of relaxation. It has physiological effects on the body that can impair functioning in the short term and cause devastating damage in the long term. Why should we study alcohol use: consuming alcohol is a common behaviour in canadian culture. There are many kinds of alcohol, and each is an organic compound. Alcohol: the intoxication ingredient in fermented or distilled beverages; a colourless, pungent liquid. They can be: beer (from a mixture of grain, 3-6%; ales and malt have 6-8%); wines (juices of grapes fermented, 9-14%); hard liquor (distilled of brewed or fermented grains, 35-50%). In canada, any beverages containing 1. 1% or more alcohol is considered an alcoholic beverage. One drink: the amount of a beverage that typically contains 13. 6 grams of alcohol (standard drink).
