Chapter 9 social dimensions of aging, health and care. Looking at aging as a life process as opposed to a disease; it results in the medicalizaion of aging whereas people try to prevent aging for instance. Healthy aging is a perspecive that describes aging as a natural life process; something to look forward to and embrace instead of being fearful of it. Social gerontology views aging as a social process. Disengagement theory withdrawal from society being beneicial as it prepares one for death. Acivity theory an individual must coninue to acively seek social roles and if they cannot seek their current ones, then they must ind new ones, in order to age healthily. Some age related rules and discriminaion is accepted (eg. 7 year olds driving cars) but some is unjusiiable such as denying employment because of age or less vigorous treatment.
