Document Summary

Observational studies can also be administered by issuing a survey. When administering a survey, the researcher must first identify the population that is to be targeted: random sample: the process of using chance to select individuals from a population to be included in the sample. If convenience is used to obtain a sample, the results of the survey are meaningless! The sample is then called a simple random sample. Simple random sampling is similar to pulling names from a hat: example: sophia has 4 tickets to a concert and she has 6 friends (yolanda, micheal, Kevin, marissa, annie, katie) who want to go with her. In order to be fair sophia decides to randomly select 3 of her friends to attend. List all possible samples of n=3 from the population of n=6 (once an individual is selected they cannot to chosen again) Sample: the term used to describe the individuals in the sample (from a population)
