Altered states of consciousness: a mental state other than ordinary waking consciousness (e. g. , sleep, meditation, hypnosis, drug-induced state) Sleep cycles: cycle (1,2,3,4,3,2,rem) lasts ~ 90 min, after 1st 2 cycles (~3 hrs), usually no more stage 4, rem gets progressively longer. Age: infants & young children longest sleep & highest % of rem, children: champion sleepers, teens: don"t get enough sleep (need +2hrs, as people age: quality & quantity of sleep, % of rem same. Affects metabolism (store fat) after 60hrs without sleep, some pp experience hallucinations impairs functioning, mood, alertness, performance. Microsleep: momentary lapse from wakefulness into sleep. Rem rebound o amount of rem following rem deprivation: often associated with unpleasant dreams & nightmares. Note: as night goes on, rem dreams become longer & more complex, best recall: awaken during dream, reflect our preoccupations --- fears, wishes, plans, hopes, worries.
